MS² Swiss machining — small parts, tight tolerances

Sliding-headstock work is its own discipline. Guide bushing behaviour, bar preparation, coolant delivery and tool geometry all move together, and a shop that treats it like short turning finds out the expensive way. This is the work MS² came up on.

Guide bushing and non-guide-bushing

Both, chosen for the part rather than the habit. Bar prep, straightness and material condition get decided before the first setup, because that is where guide-bushing work is won or lost.

Live tooling and cross-working

Driven holders for cross drilling, milling, slotting and thread whirling — so the part comes off complete rather than moving to a second operation and a second set of tolerances.

Small-diameter drilling and threading

The operations where chip evacuation decides everything. High-pressure coolant strategy and tool selection worked as one problem, not two.

Polygon and hex milling

Formed features cut in cycle instead of broached afterwards, when the geometry and the machine allow it.

Bar-fed production runs

Bar feed, tool life management and process stability engineered together so a run survives an unattended shift rather than merely starting one.

02 Where the difficulty usually lives

Difficult alloys

Nickel and cobalt alloys, precipitation-hardening stainless and the rest of the family that eats inserts — approached with grade selection and cutting strategy, not more horsepower.

Chip control

Long stringy chips wrapping a small part is a scrapped part. Coolant pressure, tool geometry and feed strategy get solved as one system.

Tool life and prove-out

Tool life measured and managed rather than guessed, so an unattended shift ends with parts instead of a crash.

Inspection

Features inspected against the print with the method the tolerance actually calls for, and documented.

Material, quantity, tolerance and the date you need it. If the part is already running somewhere and running badly, say that too — it usually tells us more than the drawing does.
